This is the proxy, shown as an orange cloud. When you are chasing an SSL problem, an Error 522 or the wrong content, the proxy can hide the real cause. Turning it off for a moment sends visitors straight to your hosting, so you can see what the server itself returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turn the proxy off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Log in to your <a href=\"https:\/\/dash.cloudflare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cloudflare dashboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> Select the domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 3.<\/strong> In the left menu, click <strong>DNS<\/strong>, then <strong>Records<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"254\" height=\"79\" src=\"https:\/\/yegara.com\/en\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image.png\" alt=\"Click on the DNS Records tab in the left-hand sidebar.\" class=\"wp-image-974\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 4.<\/strong> Find the record for your website, usually the A record for your domain and the one for <code>www<\/code>, and click <strong>Edit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"332\" height=\"65\" src=\"https:\/\/yegara.com\/en\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1.png\" alt=\"Locate the record you want and Click On EDIT\" class=\"wp-image-975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yegara.com\/en\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1.png 332w, https:\/\/yegara.com\/en\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-1-300x59.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 5.<\/strong> Under <strong>Proxy status<\/strong>, click the orange cloud. It turns grey and the text changes from \u201cProxied\u201d to <strong>DNS only<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"172\" height=\"87\" src=\"https:\/\/yegara.com\/en\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-2.png\" alt=\"Under the Proxy status column, click the Orange Cloud icon. It will turn Gray and the text will change from Proxied to\" class=\"wp-image-976\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 6.<\/strong> Click <strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check that it took effect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the cloud is grey, Cloudflare no longer stands between visitors and your hosting. The change takes a few minutes to spread. To confirm it, look up your domain and check that it now shows the IP address of your hosting, not one that belongs to Cloudflare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"165\" height=\"49\" src=\"https:\/\/yegara.com\/en\/guide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-3.png\" alt=\"Once the cloud is gray, Cloudflare stops masking your server\u2019s IP. Because DNS changes take time to propagate, use\" class=\"wp-image-977\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now open your site again. If the problem is gone, it was in the Cloudflare settings, for example the SSL mode. If it is still there, the cause is on the hosting side: see <a href=\"https:\/\/yegara.com\/en\/guide\/common-website-errors-403-404-500-503\/\">Common Website Errors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/yegara.com\/en\/guide\/ssl-and-https-free-certificate-and-not-secure\/\">SSL and HTTPS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turn it back on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you have found the problem, edit the record again and switch the cloud back to orange. Without the proxy your site loses Cloudflare&#8217;s caching and protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-4-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcd8 <strong>Records that should always stay grey<\/strong><br><br>Keep the <code>mail<\/code> record on <strong>DNS only<\/strong>.
